The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania redesigned its MBA curriculum in 2012 to create an intensive, cross functional core of business fundamentals combined with leadership, communication and analytical skills with the goal of “grow[ing] leaders who act decisively to meet tomorrow’s biggest challenges.” Let’s take a look at some of their new electives for 2019-2020.
Matthew Bidwell’s “People Analytics” examines how data is used to improve the management of people. Students learn best practices in people management and are guided in conducting people analytics.
In Ingrid Nembhard’s “Managing Health Care Organizations,” the focus is on sharpening the leadership, problem-solving, and presentation skills of students who are planning to be leaders in health care organizations. Students work with case studies, in-class exercises, and class discussions to learn the analytic frameworks, concepts, tools and skills required for leadership positions.
Wharton also has a couple of new real estate courses that look interesting: Michael Wong’s “Global Real Estate: Risk, Politics and Culture,” and Gilles Duranton’s “Real Estate Disruptions.” In the latter, students focus on how tech has changed and will continue to change every aspect of the real estate industry. Students work with a recognized industry leader alongside Wharton faculty and a series of guest lecturers to take a broad and deep look at disruptions in the industry.
